Reiki History
Reiki is a form of energy healing that was born in Japan in the late 1800s. It was developed by Mikao Usui, who received a spiritual revelation while on a solitary retreat on Mount Kurama. This led him to develop the system of Reiki. The word Reiki is made up of two Japanese words: “Rei” which means “universal” and “Ki” which means “life energy.”
Usui began teaching Reiki in the early 1900s, and his system of healing quickly gained popularity in Japan.
Usui taught the technique to others and it eventually spread throughout Japan and then to other parts of the world. Reiki is based on the idea that there is a universal life energy that flows through all living things, and that this energy can be harnessed and directed by a practitioner to promote healing. The practice involves the laying on of hands, either directly on the body or just above it, in order to channel the healing energy. It is often used to help alleviate physical symptoms, such as pain, but it is also thought to promote emotional and spiritual well-being.
Usui transitioned in 1926, but his system of Reiki continues to be taught and practiced by his students.Today, Reiki is widely used in many countries and is becoming increasingly popular as a form of complementary or alternative therapy.
